What is a Continuous Skill in Sports and Athletics? (Motor Learning Theory)


A continuous skill is a motor skill that has no discrete beginning and ending. These are movements that a performed in a rhythmic or cyclic fashion. Running, swimming, rowing, and skipping rope are examples of continuous skills. Unlike other types of skills, We do not talk about
whether or not we complete a continuous skill. For example, you can stop running at any time and the movement is not incomplete. On the other hand, if you were throwing a baseball, and you stopped the throwing movement without actually letting go of a the ball, you will not have performed the skill of throwing. So this is not a continuous skill, but a discrete skill. There are other skills that may easily be confused with continuous skill because they involve many individual movements and are carried out over time, but instead they are actually discrete skills linked together in a sequence. These are called serial skills.
