The University Eye Center’s Sports and Performance Vision Center

My name is Dr. Daniel Laby I’m the director of the Sports and Performance Vision Center here at the College of Optometry The Sports and Performance Vision Center brings together the various missions of the college patient care, research, and clinical education My time with sports vision really began 20 years ago just as I was finishing my medical education at UCLA Los Angeles the Los Angeles Dodgers approached our department and wanted to get together and figure out what makes a baseball player tick what is different about their eyes than the general person allow him to hit this 90 mph fastball in an incredible fraction of time as that progressed more and more teams wanted to get involved the LA Kings hockey team, we looked at the NY Mets, the St. Louis Cardinals we worked with the Boston Redsocks the Cleveland Indians in fact right now we work with 5 different major league baseball teams we’ve worked with the Boston Celtics team for several years and we even went to Beijing with the US Olympic team and so what we really want to do is take somebody past what they can do as a normal and get them to perform at an optimal in whatever visual functions they need I think that’s really the main focus of our Sports and Performance Vision Clinic here not just to work with the athletes that’s certainly a major focus but to help anybody who needs certain vision to perform ideally and best at their job our opening day will be June 1st but actually we’re starting already to move forward with that mission we’ll be holding here in March a conference for Sports Vision specialists throughout the country in fact we except people from 5 continents to come to this meeting and this will be the kick off tot he Sports and Performance Vision Center we want to make sure that every single athlete in the tri-state area and anywhere in the country or the world can come to NY come to our center here have their eyes evaluated improved let them perform as well as they can but we also want to be the center for research we want to make sure that we’re involved in groundbreaking work with new ideas we want to show scientifically that these ideas make a difference in performance then we want to train people we want to make sure there’s doctors that can finish here go out to anywhere on the globe and use our ideas and techniques they learned here to help other people perform better at sports or at anything they want to do
