I’m sure most of us know about the
Olympic Games that weeks-long televised event your parents are always watching
that comes around every two years with the swimming and the skiing and the
gymnastics that’s the Olympic Games we know today but did you know that the Olympic Games actually had a very different start there were so many differences between the first Olympic Games and the Olympic
Games now that it would be so hard to name all of them but that doesn’t mean
we’re not going to try the first Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece which
was an empire that spanned all the way from Northern Africa to the European
country of Spain the Olympic Games began in Athens, a very important city in
ancient Greece about 2700 years ago the ancient Olympic Games from then on would only be held in Athens the modern day Olympics on the other
hand are always hosted in a different city from all around the world the 2018 Olympic Games were held in Pyeongchang South Korea and the 2016 Olympics were
held in Rio Brazil the 2020 Olympic Games are set to be held in Tokyo Japan when the ancient Olympic Games first began there was only one event which wasthe Sprint as the games continued they added other events like jumping which had participants run and jump into a pile of sand to see how far they could
go and the discus throw which has participants throw a heavy weight as far
as they can nowadays the modern Olympic Games enjoy more than 300 different
events that participants can choose from from archery to basketball boxing
fencing weightlifting figure skating and many more the ancient Olympics didn’t
allow women at the event at all since men traditionally completed completely
naked thank goodness that’s another difference at the ancient and modern
Olympics women nowadays are more than welcome and everyone gets snazzy outfits tailored to their event at the end of the Olympics both modern and ancient, a winner was crowned the Olympic Games whether it was 2700 years ago or just one have always been about competition and fighting to win that hasn’t changed. the prizes however have changed a bit ancient Olympic winners were awarded a
sacred olive wreath and bragging rights nowadays the modern Olympic winners areeither awarded a gold silver or bronze medal for first second or third place
and well bragging rights there were many differences between the ancient Olympics and our modern Olympics, but there’s one thing that hasn’t changed in its 2,700
years people have always and will always find joy and competition achievements
and glory that’s what the Olympic Games is really all about
