TAKE VO TAKE VO WIAA BOYS BASKETBALL DIVISION 5 STATE FINALS Bangor boys facing McDonell Central Catholic in the D5 state basketball championship. Just like in the semis. Bangor begins the game on a little run. Caleb Miedema three makes the score 7-nothing. Macks back within three. Drew Johnson takes it strong to the basket for the layup and foul for the three point play. Luke Reader with maybe the prettiest of his 11 assists on the day. leads to an easy two for Cade Amborn. What a state tournament for Grant Manke. Rebound and put-back. part of a 19-point performance for him. They lead 44-31 at the break. Miedema comes out firing after missing minutes with an ankle injury. Scores the Cardinals’ first seven points of the second half. Reader then caps off a four-point possession that included three offensive boards. Bangor ahead 56-39. Rebounding and defense allowing Bangor to keep extending their lead. Huge block by Johnson. Yesterday Bangor set a Division five state record for widest margin of victory. DIVISION 5 FINAL 3 MCDONELL CENTRAL CATHOLIC Today it’s a D-5 record 91-points scored. Cardinals state champs. News 8 Sports Director Gregg Wavrunek has more from Madison. All weekend long at state spectators and opposing players commented on the strength, physicalness, and toughness of the Bangor Cardinals. Their hard work pays off as they claim their first state championship in program history. That toughness was on display with senior guard Caleb Miedema, who goes down with an ankle injury in the first half, and returns to score 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. Caleb At first when I went down I knew it was painful. I heard it pop.>From there the tears just started coming for me because I thought I wasn’t going to be playing for the rest of the game. I came back. It was alright for the rest of the game, it’s pretty sore right now. Luke Come back out for the second half and he’s out there. I kind of look behind me and he’s running behind me. I’m like, ‘OK, OK, we can do this.’ He just goes off in the second half. It’s a testament to how mentally strong he is. The balance and depth of the Cardinals on display once again with six players scoring seven or more points. Season leading scorer Luke Reader sets the Division 5 tournament and single game record for assists with 11 versus McDonell Central. Luke I have four great guys around me, four stars and then bench players also. I can trust them with anything. Throw them the ball and they will score. Coach They find the open guy wherever it is. They trust in each other that they’ll do the right thing. They are just extremely unselfish. At the end of the day it’s about winning the ballgame and they’ve done that. With the win it is now state titles for Bangor in boys basketball, girls basketball, and football all in the same school year. a first in WIAA history. Coach Bangor pride is at an all-time high. It’s a testament to all of the hard work that these kids put in. Extremely proud of them and we’re going to miss this senior class. Bangor finishes the season with a record of 27-and-1. On the other side of the state line….we already know the Caledonia boys basketball team is heading to next week’s state tournament. Two more local teams have a chance to punch their tickets tonight. TAKE VO TAKE VO MSHSL BOYS BASKETBALL SECTION 1A CHAMPIONSHIP Spring Grove versus Rushford-Peterson….winner earns in a spot in the 1-A state tourney. Early on, Alex Folz gets into the lane and delivers the shuffle pass over to Sam Sanness, giving the Lions a one point lead. But the Trojans respond with a 15-2 run, capped off by this Caden Grinde three point bucket…. Right before the half, Ben Ansell gets position down low for the easy two. Rush-Pete leads 33-16 at the break. Trojans dont stop there as Ansell gets it across the lane and finishes through the contact putting them up by 21. Ansell getting on the board again with the easy bunny. He finished with a game-high 31. Spring Grove 30 That’s a dream come true honestly, to go to state in anything. So we have a couple days to prepare for that and then head up to the cities. I’ve been dreaming about this for years. Ever since I was a little kid and watched the older guys go to state, I’ve always wanted to go myself and to see this come true is amazing. Beyond anything I could imagine, it’s amazing. We worked so hard to be here and we’re just reeping the rewards right now. Its amazing. Its been a long journey and we’ve had to fight really hard but its finally coming true right now. TAKE VO TAKE VO NSIC BASEBALL Winona State playing a double header today at Copeland Park versus Minot State. Warriors in a 5-nothing hole in the 4th inning….Derek Martin up with two on…deep to centerfield…sac fly scores a run…cuts deficit to 4. Minot State answers with a big inning in the 5th….Andrew Black…base hit to left….one will touch home….7-1 away team. few batters later…..Dustin Wilcox bounces one through the infield…plates another run…. MINOT STATE. WINONA STATE GAME 1 MINOT STATE WINONA STATE GAME 2 Winona State loses game 1….11-5 Warriors also drop game 2…9-7 Hockey time…Coulee Region take on the Minnesota Magician. scoreless in the 2nd. Colin Price looking towards goal…puck gets loss in the traffic….Magician take possession. Later in the period…Minnesota on the run…Brendan Skarda 1 on 1 with Emil Zetterquist…Zetterquist stuffs it…keeps this one tied.. Chill with another chance…Brandon Koch gets inside…he will be turned away…. COULEE REGION Coulee Region loses this one….5-1
