A lot of people enjoy video games, myself
included. But some crazy bastards take them so seriously they end up forgetting about
real life completely, and as a result a number of people die each year from being glued to
their computer screens. So join us as we count 10 people killed by video games 10. 3 Day Gaming Binge
Only three weeks into 2015, two Taiwanese men have already met their unfortunate ends
due to gaming marathon binges. The first was a 38 year old man who was found dead after
playing video games for five days straight at an Internet Café in Taipei. The second
was a 32 year old man who had a heart attack after playing for three days without stopping.
The worst part? Workers at the internet café didn’t realise the man had passed away until
he was dead for 4 hours. Apparently he’s been known to sleep face down on the table,
so it just looked like he was grabbing a quick nap before continuing his session.
9. Death by Diablo Another Taiwanese victim, 18 year old Chuang
reportedly died in July 2012 after a 40 hour non stop marathon gaming session of Diablo
III, once again while at an internet café. After his crazy binge he was found asleep
and woken up by an employee. He stood up, took a few steps around and collapsed, after
which he died on the spot. Apparently the cause of death was either a heart attack or
a blood clot, either way, following this incident Blizzard, the creators of the game, released
a statement encouraging people to prioritize their lives over any form of entertainment.
8. Bezerk The earliest known deaths attributed to playing
video games come from two men, Jeff Dailey and Peter Burkowski, who both died playing
the popular at the time Atari game “Berzerk”. Both Daily and Burkowski died in a similar
fashion. They often visited their local arcades and eventually took it too far, reaching ridiculously
impressive high scores. Dailey died moments after scoring his personal best, he collapsed
and was pronounced dead of a heart attack at the young age of 19, while Burkowski also
fell victim to a cardiac arrest moments after entering his initials on the Berzerk score
board. 7. Too Much Halo
Chris Staniforth from the United Kingdom was in love with Halo. So much so, that he would
often have 12 hour long Halo sessions without taking any breaks. Sadly, during one of his
regular sessions, a blood clot travelled from his legs into his lungs, instantly killing
him. The autopsy revealed that Chris suffered from Deep vein thrombosis, which has an increased
risk when the person doesn’t move for long periods of time. 6. 650 Hours
A 33 year old Chinese man who’s name had not been released, decided to endure a totally
insane 650 hour gaming session before he eventually, and unsurprisingly bit the dust. Supposedly
he also shelled out over $1500 dollars on the game he was playing before he began on
his journey. Over this 27 day period he barely drank or ate or slept at all, and what he
did ingest was in the form of instant noodles, which pretty much sounds like a normal college
experience. He reportedly died of heart failure and malnutrition.
5. National Holiday Binge Back in 2007, a 26 year old man from China
named Zhang, died of heart failure after a week long marathon of online gaming during
a national holiday. Mr Zhang led a full fledged MMO lifestyle, devoting the majority of his
days power-levelling instead of you know, going outside, or standing up at all really.
Because of this he had a shockingly poor blood circulation as his heart struggled to pump
blood around his large body. 4. Hold Your Wee for a Wii
Perhaps the stupidest and most unnecessary death on our list. Jennifer Strange from California
willingly participated in a competition held on her local radio station called “Hold
your Wee for a Wii” in which she drank over two gallons of water and refused to urinate
in the hopes of obtaining a Nintendo Wii. Sadly this didn’t work out so well for Jennifer
and the mother of three met her untimely death by water intoxication.
3. 50 hours of Starcraft South Korean Starcraft addict Lee was an industrial
boiler repair man and college graduate, before his addiction let to his ultimate demise.
His devotion to gaming led to malnourishment and sleep depravity, costing him not only
his job, but his long time relationship with his girlfriend who was also an avid gamer.
You know you play too many games when your gamer girlfriend dumps you for playing too
many games. After these devastating blows to Lee’s life, he turned to binge gaming
which led to death by heart failure, caused most likely by exhaustion and dehydration.
2. Wii Unfit A contrast to other spots on our list, Tim
Eves met his death while attempting to actually improve his physical conditioning. While jogging
to the Fit program on the Wii, the 25 year old collapsed on the floor and was pronounced
dead before he even made it to the hospital. Tim was a healthy and fit individual who had
no prior health problems and worked in manual labour to make his living. It’s possible
that during his fitness session he ignored or didn’t notice signs that something may
have been wrong with his heart, but nobody’s quite sure.
1. The Gamer Girl The youngest passing on this list, a thirteen
year old girl, was casually talking, hanging out and playing on her Xbox 360 before telling
her mother she couldn’t breathe. She suffered a heart attack so severe that she was left
brain dead and on-life support. As difficult as it must have been for the parents, they
decided to pull the plug on her life support machine, making her one of the youngest video
game deaths in the history. It is unclear if the video games she was playing had any
relation to her death but it’s been speculated that she may have become distracted by her
gaming session leading her to neglect any symptoms she may have been experiencing.
